First, myself and three other friends went to Cadíz for Carnaval, the pre-Lent festival that pretty much goes on all around the world. Cadíz is definitely the best city in Spain for the festival and it goes on for about 2 weeks. We took a bus there that afternoon and came back very early in the morning and it was amazing. Definitely an experience I won't forget soon.<br />
Here are some pictures from Cadíz:<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Carnaval in Cadíz is known for being the most sarcastic and the wittiest of the carnavals around the world. I didn't really know what that meant before I went but I think I have a slightly better idea now. Everyone there is dressed up in costumes whether it be a mask or face paint or something more elaborate, usually making something in current events. The most iconic part of Cadíz are the chirigotas which are small groups that write and sing songs in the streets throughout the festival. Their songs are apparently famous for being witty and for making fun of politics and such. Carnaval definitely was a crazy experience with the sheer amount of people crammed into this city and it was a lot of fun. I'm glad I had the chance to go. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The weekend after that we had a more mellow day trip as we decided to take a train to Ronda, a small Spanish town that has some fame because Hemingway spent time there and wrote about it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here are some pics:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div>Ronda is situated on top of some cliffs and the older and newer neighborhoods are separated by a river. It is famous for its beautiful bridges that cross the river. It was a really fun day. It was nice to get out of Granada for a day and explore a random Spanish town that we really knew nothing about. We ended up just walking around all day, grabbing coffee, stopping in a restaurant and then heading back to Granada as nighttime fell.Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-953010151773098112012-02-07T08:30:00.000-08:002012-02-07T08:30:39.957-08:00Dinner the other nightThe other night Bret and I made some fish tacos and I think we were pretty proud of them. They came out really good and it was just nice to have actual mexican food for the first time in a very long time. Also, it's just nice to have something that tastes like home every now and then. Especially amidst all the Spanish food and tapas.<br />

The winter break was a lot of fun. My family came and visited me in Granada and it was awesome to show them around town and give them a taste of what my life is like on this side of the Atlantic. After that Kelsey came after her program in London ended before heading back to the States and I really enjoyed having her here and doing all the touristy things I had done. By that point I knew my monuments of Granada pretty well and I think I made a pretty good tour guide for the time she was here. Anyways, now that I'm back from my brief respite from this blog which I've been so adamant about updating, I'm realizing that the New Year has given me some perspective about my time abroad thus far:<br />
<br />
1. Learning a language is hard. You can go months at it and feel like you haven't really improved very much when all of a sudden you realize that you have learned more than you thought... which is both good and frustrating at times. But i guess that's life.<br />
<br />
2. Based off that last statement, I will never take for granted how much easier everything is when you are fluent in a language, whether it be going to the movies, asking for directions, making small talk in an elevator, trying to talk in a loud bar, etc. Luckily by now I am feeling comfortable with doing all of these and simply living in a country where I am not fluent. Partly because my Spanish has improved and partly because I have grown more comfortable with being uncomfortable.<br />
<br />
3. Which brings me to my next point, being comfortable with the uncomfortable is a very good thing. There is nothing quite as uncomfortable as living in a country where the people speak gibberish (luckily I've moved past this phase but nonetheless my point remains). But after a while of forcing myself to enjoy that feeling of discomfort I can truly say that there is a part of me that likes that nervousness and feeling of discomfort now and I'm proud of that. I think it's something that a lot of people don't necessarily have.<br />
<br />
4. Living in Spain feels far more independent than going to college ever did. When I first went to college in the States I felt incredibly independent moving away from home but a big part of me still felt tied to home (which was really nice). It's not that I don't feel tied to home now, but that I just feel more independent on a larger scale. I'm planning trips to other countries, living with semi-random Spaniards in a city my family and friends had never seen until this last month. It's definitely a strange sensation.<br />
<br />
5. Which brings me to my last point. Living abroad is more independent but also more difficult. I have absolutely loved my experience here in Spain and there have been so many truly incredible aspects to it so far. Nonetheless, living in a foreign country is also very difficult. While I love experiencing and learning this new culture I think it's easier to get more homesick over time because you're missing out on the things that make you comfortable, whether that be your home and family and friends or something less important like an American cheeseburger. Either way, I have no regrets about being here so far but I'm realizing also how important my home is to me as well in a lot of ways.Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-79740550982019715742011-12-13T06:33:00.000-08:002011-12-13T06:33:37.877-08:00Londres, part twoAfter Scotland, we took a short ride down to London and stayed with Kels for a few days before heading back to Granada.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">London was really cool as well. It was great to get to explore more of the city and have Kelsey show us around. While we were there we spent one day walking all around the city seeing all the touristy things but it was still a lot of fun to explore. Also while we were there Kelsey showed us this pub basically dedicated to Winston Churchill with a cool Thai restaurant in the back. We walked through Kensington Gardens on the way there which was fun to see in the fall. We also went to Borough Market which was a little outside market that sold lots of organic food like cheese and meats; it was fun to walk around and try free samples of different things. I think my favorite thing we did was go to Winter Wonderland. I forgot my camera that night but it was incredible. Hyde Park is filled with a Christmas fair with a market and carnival rides and fried foods, it was great to walk through everything and get in the holiday spirit. I couldn't stop thinking about how much fun it will be to show Kelsey around Granada later this month when she comes to Spain.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-73438960042906243972011-12-13T06:07:00.000-08:002011-12-13T06:23:45.587-08:00Escocia (Scotland)!November was definitely my hard month for school but as soon as I finished that nonsense I got to start December which is definitely my easiest month for school. We had a break in the very beginning so Bret and I went to Scotland to meet up with Kelsey, we met in Glasgow and spent most of our time in Edinburgh. After that we went to London for a few days before coming back to Granada. It was a good start to a month that should be a lot of fun with my family and Kelsey visiting later on.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Scotland was amazing! I think it was my favorite place I've been so far while I've been in Europe. Glasgow was a little slow and not super exciting in my opinion but Edinburgh was one of the coolest cities I've seen. We could walk practically anywhere and there was so much history everywhere you looked. The only downside was how cold it was there, but we sort of got used to that as we were there longer. We did a lot while we were there. We visited the Castle which was really cool, plus we saw the 1 o'clock gun where they fire a cannon at 1 pm every day (it used to be used as a way of telling the sailors what time it was), went on a Scotch Whiskey Experience Tour which was both ridiculous and awesome, got a tour of the underground network of streets that exists intact underneath Edinburgh because it was built over later on, ate some great food including Haggis (sheep's intestine) and neeps (mashed turnips) at some really cool pubs, and went to the Christmas market in town. My favorite thing we did was definitely hiking Arthur's Seat though. It was a completely ridiculous experience. My shoes had absolutely no traction so as we walked higher up it became snowier and icier til it got to the point where I couldn't move whithout sliding backwards. So for the rest of the hike I wore one of Bret's shoes and completed the hike to a great view of the whole city and the bay. I really loved Edinburgh but I think a huge part of it was hanging out with Kelsey and Bret again.</div><br />

My program has a dinner planned for us tonight, the day after Thanksgiving which I'm really excited for but let's be honest, I couldn't let Thanksgiving pass up without doing something. So Bret and I decided to try our best to make a ton of Thanksgiving food and have two of our better friends from the program over, as well as introducing our two Spanish roomates and one of their girlfriends to this foreign holiday. Bret and I spent a while cooking the food; we made green bean casserole, stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, and pan fried some turkey because we were too intimidated to cook a whole bird. As well as Bret made an apple pie for dessert the day before and our friends brought some food as well. So we had plenty among the 7 of us.<br />

I'm glad I still was able to get that feeling of Thanksgiving thousands of miles away from home. But it was also definitely bittersweet being away from home on a day that everyone associates with family and friends. I definitely have a better appreciation of how lucky I am and how exciting it's going to be to go home.</div><br />

There were so many things that would be different: the language, what type of homework and projects I would be doing, how the professors act and how the other Spanish and international students interact. So I was definitely nervous. Luckily, the more time I spend in this institution I realize that it's nothing to sweat too much. It might just be that the University of Granada isn't particularly difficult but it seems generally pretty relaxed. The Spanish students don't really seem to take it as seriously as students in America do. Now this is obviously a huge generalization but I don't intend it to mean that the Spaniards care less about their education, just that there is less intensity and urgency associated with college here. It's also strange to adjust to the homework. In the US I've always had a lot of consistent homework throughout the week with the occasional project or essay or exam whereas here there seems to be a much larger emphasis on those occasional projects or essays and not so much emphasis on the reading and sidework. It makes it interesting as you go from weeks with hardly any work to do to another week with two huge projects due. I'm not really sure which system is better. I feel like I definitely learn more in the US but that's hardly fair considering I'm learning it in my native language whereas in Spain the majority of my focus is simply on understanding. But I do enjoy the change and its fun to see how other countries view and approach the idea of education.Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-89034646562627620032011-11-05T11:03:00.000-07:002011-11-05T11:03:01.281-07:00MadridWe had a long weekend over Halloween so some of us decided to visit Madrid considering we hadn't had the chance to see it yet. Plus it worked out in our favor that a friend offered for us to stay in his apartment and it's only a bus ride away. It was a ton of fun all in all.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It was a really fun weekend in Madrid. Really busy but really fun. We went one of the museums which had a lot of more modern art but was really really cool. They had a lot of pieces by Dali and Picasso including Guernica which is one of my favorite paintings. It took up an entire wall and was really impressive but we weren't allowed to take pictures of it for obvious reasons. We also did a lot of walking around and saw a ton of the city and checked out some of the different neighborhoods. Retiro Park was one of my favorite things we did. We bought some food and had a picnic in the park which was a lot of fun and the park was huge. We were lucky because Anthony (who was hosting us) knew a ton about the city and showed us around to a lot of things we probably wouldn't have known about without him. One night he showed us a little cafe where they had a ton of board games so we drank coffee and played trivial pursuit which was pretty fun. Madrid was definitely a big city, much more so than Granada and even seemed more so than Barcelona. I'm really glad I got to visit and I definitely would like to go back again if I have the chance but that being said I don't think I could see myself living there. It seemed too much like every other really big city, a ton to do but kind of overwhelming. It was nice to return to Granada and realize that it feels more and more like a home for me the longer I stay here.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-57862371471554467062011-10-23T08:57:00.000-07:002011-10-23T08:57:07.501-07:00¡Barca!This post is a little late but here it is! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Barca was a much bigger city than Granada is so it was much easier to find things to do. We were definitely busy the whole time we were there. We went to the beach a couple times, la boqueria which is a giant open air market with lots of really good food, saw a bunch of things by the architect Gaudi who has had a huge influence on the city (designed Parc Güell and Sagrada Familia), walked around this huge park in the middle of the city which was close to the Arc de Triomf, and later that night went to the fountain show which was really close to the olympic stadium in Barca. It was a really jam-packed weekend but I feel like I really got a feel for the city and felt like I could navigate it (and its public transportation) pretty well by the end of the weekend. Plus it was really fun to hang out with Kels and her friends as well as Bret. Although Barca had a ton of stuff to do and was probably on the whole more of a city in every way than Granada, I was definitely happy to return on Sunday. It's nice that the more time I spend here the more I start to think of Granada as my home base and it's becoming more and more like home (although still nowhere close to how much I love socal and Berkeley).</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-36490805234308121182011-10-07T03:04:00.000-07:002011-10-07T03:04:34.972-07:00Mi Piso (apartment)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQFRqJFjwt4W4GEVmi33WWmlc3rga4Inx47zAMLn1Y-auI5Jra1Ntsrpy2qFaHb7kcP19XXr796DXc9e9HZEXMlNTtKQyer-O75RzNJAzY-viFvtEDo44IJFIbteaYvn1iGeSkNb_yaRH/s1600/DSC00449.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQFRqJFjwt4W4GEVmi33WWmlc3rga4Inx47zAMLn1Y-auI5Jra1Ntsrpy2qFaHb7kcP19XXr796DXc9e9HZEXMlNTtKQyer-O75RzNJAzY-viFvtEDo44IJFIbteaYvn1iGeSkNb_yaRH/s400/DSC00449.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(my room)</div><br />

Bret and I were really lucky when it came to our new apartment. We're living with Jorge and Antonio, two spaniards who are really nice. Plus, the apartment is in a really great location, very close to the center of the city. And I love having the terrace to hang out on.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-42558615044139906122011-10-07T02:56:00.000-07:002011-10-07T02:56:14.729-07:00Londres!This last weekend, I was lucky enough to be able to go visit my girlfriend Kelsey in London where she's studying abroad for the semester. Thanks to ryan air the tickets weren't too expensive either.<br />

While I was there Kels was able to show me around her neighborhood that she's living in now. We went to the natural history museum, the park, a local pub which was fun, and some restaurants. It was really fun to do some exploring in a new city but in all honesty the best part was just hanging out with Kels again. Luckily, I'll get to see her again soon because we're going to meet up in Barcelona next weekend!</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-39293174818945677942011-09-19T09:18:00.000-07:002011-09-19T09:18:38.598-07:00Alhambra and a weekend tripThis Friday our group had a guided tour to the Alhambra, the main attraction of Granada so needless to say I was incredibly excited. The only disappointment of that day was that I thought I had charged my camera yet found out that it had essentially no battery left and I got this one picture of the entrance haha.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtqwLVX5O6aSJtKQaL-U9w3leOvrv_b6rQIkQoOLoV6UkVbmaM1oDZH0-Tg-nrlnP6aZdChGf6RE33ReaUZPY-AGbG9_4J4oEO_9H-3swELFQ17SV5UoHYY7TX9LS3789PzKHo-gfbjeUk/s1600/DSC00309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtqwLVX5O6aSJtKQaL-U9w3leOvrv_b6rQIkQoOLoV6UkVbmaM1oDZH0-Tg-nrlnP6aZdChGf6RE33ReaUZPY-AGbG9_4J4oEO_9H-3swELFQ17SV5UoHYY7TX9LS3789PzKHo-gfbjeUk/s320/DSC00309.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
That being said, it was definitely the most amazing experience I've had so far in Granada and Spain as a whole. It was absolutely beautiful and learning about the history behind it from one of my professors was awesome. Plus, it's situated on top of the highest hill of the city so it has amazing views of the rest of the city. So Friday was definitely a great (yet exhausting) day.<br />
<br />
This weekend, some of the people who are in the program with me and I went to Málaga and Nerja, two cities on the beach. We spent Saturday in Málaga which was a really cool city. We ended up going to the Pablo Picasso Museum (he was from there) and then spent the rest of the day at a beach called Pedregalejo which was about 20 minutes outside of the city. It was an awesome beach and all the restaurants were amazing. Each one did this thing where they filled up a boat with sand and used it as a giant bbq for fresh fish. That night we explored the city a little bit and ended up hanging out on the roof of our hostel because there was a free concert which was surprisingly good. The next morning we took a bus ride to Nerja, a small town that is right on the Mediterranean. We went to the Cueva Nerja (Nerja Cave) first. It was amazing, I was blown away at how big the caves actually were and how beautiful they were. Plus it was nice to get out of the sun for a little. After that we went down to the beach and spent the rest of the day swimming in the Mediterranean. This weekend was so much fun and really relaxing.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This weekend I got the chance to visit the Cathedral in Granada, one of the coolest landmarks of the city because it's so amazing and beautiful and old (built in the 16th century). It was definitely an amazing trip. I was blown away by the sheer grandeur of the building, just thinking about how many men and how much money it must have taken to build something like this. The history of the building was crazy as well. We had an art history professor lead us through a tour so she definitely knew exactly what she was talking about. Such a huge part of the city is the struggle between the former Muslim rulers and the conquest of Granada by the Catholics. Granada was actually the last region to be re-conquered by the Christians. The whole Cathedral had this theme in it of victory and conquest as everything was a symbol of their triumph over the Muslims. It was all very interesting and made me happy about why I chose to come to this city, for its rich history. Despite all of the awesomeness of this building, it got me really excited to go see the Alhambra on Friday and see some of the creations of the Moors. I'm really pumped to be in a place where you can so clearly see the history and the stories that happened 100s of years before. I love how they just build around these ancient buildings and you can just walk among them, noticing modern skyscrapers next to grandiose cathedrals.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-69298035981658855372011-09-03T08:26:00.000-07:002011-09-04T09:07:18.523-07:00Visita al Albaicin y Sacromonte<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_uiv2zC3XheDYGW75JA9KLETC5oDJDKTSbzDFz1N1AGiLVStOpmgug0r8LWuAo90sQhGl1c8v9Z4sxFXvrTCtDQLGrhOTxElBhF9qpGHDfMeiUmPdhmEn5W2o8wdpBosN7uzFeZM8wt-/s1600/DSC00138.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_uiv2zC3XheDYGW75JA9KLETC5oDJDKTSbzDFz1N1AGiLVStOpmgug0r8LWuAo90sQhGl1c8v9Z4sxFXvrTCtDQLGrhOTxElBhF9qpGHDfMeiUmPdhmEn5W2o8wdpBosN7uzFeZM8wt-/s400/DSC00138.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For part of our program, they scheduled a "field trip" of sorts where we walked through the Albaicin and up to the top of Sacromonte (Sacred Mountain). These are areas of Granada which contain a lot of the oldest buildings in the city and in Spain so it's amazing. Nowadays, they are where many of the gitanos (gypsies) live so it's also different to see these parts of town. It was amazing to get out of the lower parts of the city because it's hard to see very much around you. When we got to the top of Sacramonte we had an amazing view of the Alhambra (which can be seen in the second picture) and the rest of the city which was beautiful. I felt a little awkward being in such a big group just because I felt like we were invading these quiet gypsy neighborhoods but it was still one of the coolest experiences I've had here so far. I definitely plan on going up there on multiple occasions throughout this year.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I am now in Spain! I can't believe I've been living here for a couple days now, it has been crazy to adjust to a whole other country. When Bret and I got here on Thursday we took a bus into the city and then a taxi to our hostel which we were staying at. It was called the Oasis Hostel and it was really nice. It was a ton of people who were our age as well and we're traveling through Europe. The first picture is the view from its roof and the second picture is the lobby of the hostel. We didn't really do too much that day because we were way too tired and jet lagged so we wandered and got dinner and then went to bed. On Friday we moved into our dormitorio next to the university. The third picture is the room I'm living in (can't believe it's a single) and the fourth and fifth pictures are pictures of the dorm itself which is a really awesome building. So far I've been meeting a ton of people in my program and it has been ton of fun to try and navigate this foreign country with some new people in my same situation. That being said, the highlight of this whole thing has been making some Spanish friends. They are all really into nicknames so I know them as Oso (Bear), Banata (Sweet potato), Punky Brewster, and Krusty the Clown. It's was a lot of fun to hang out with them and have a chance to see a little bit of Spain through their eyes and words.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For my last weekend on this side of the Atlantic I took the train up the central coast to visit my girlfriend Kelsey. She'll be studying abroad in London this fall but it was still really great to get to see her one last time before we both go to Europe. It was a pretty relaxed weekend and we ended up going to see the movie One Day with her family. We also on Saturday went and walked around Morro Bay and on the way back stopped at a little farm where you can walk around and buy food and see some animals. This weekend was definitely just what I needed before heading to Spain on the adventure of a lifetime.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-78069106996984614362011-08-15T19:27:00.000-07:002011-08-15T19:27:28.094-07:00Trip to La Jolla<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjMKp8GgbphgeoLObrfvoARV7tn4dGuoPtTNBR6h_uJh8t3gnB1GuBPcGmiW_vWYzKiTIrklKXZXmnJbCUbZwHNPKUsn_m5AJPI7LWSc4ALm3_fEZVME6AGtF0jHbI-iHOcIl2lG57VAn_/s1600/DSC00004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjMKp8GgbphgeoLObrfvoARV7tn4dGuoPtTNBR6h_uJh8t3gnB1GuBPcGmiW_vWYzKiTIrklKXZXmnJbCUbZwHNPKUsn_m5AJPI7LWSc4ALm3_fEZVME6AGtF0jHbI-iHOcIl2lG57VAn_/s320/DSC00004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This weekend my family and I went down to La Jolla for a short vacation. On Friday, we grabbed dinner and then went to see the last Harry Potter which my parents hadn't seen yet. Saturday was a lot of fun and most of the day was spent at the horse track in Del Mar. My brother walked away with a little money but the rest of us had no luck. On Sunday we had a really busy day and played 9 holes of golf, went to a casino (where I luckily won $100), and then saw The Help after dinner. It was a really good weekend to hang out with the family and relax. It was also just a good opportunity to be together right before I leave for Spain to study abroad for a year. We all know that time together is going to be few and far between for the next year so it was really nice to get to go on this fun vacation.</div>Cameronhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07563563374811508923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854790421215033735.post-43363436059801257912011-08-11T23:04:00.000-07:002011-08-11T23:04:08.318-07:00Other People's Words<br />
